The Iglesia del Pueblo, also known as the Iglesia Del Santísimo Cristo De La Misericordia, has a somewhat uncertain history. Some historians place the foundation of the church in 1722, although by then it was a modest chapel.
It was during the 19th century that major renovations were carried out, including the construction of a new nave over the old chapel. By the end of the century, the third nave that makes up the present church was built.
It is believed that for this reason an inscription can be read at the entrance dating from 1861. In addition to the Cristo de la Misericordia, the church also venerates the Virgen del Rosario, who is the patron saint of the village.
What are the main characteristics of the village church?
The construction of the Church of the Most Holy Christ of Mercy obeys the colonial style that prevailed during the end of the 19th century. Its front is supported by pilasters and a pediment and in its interior we will find the traditional vaulted ceiling of the churches of the time. On one side, there is the bell tower, on the upper part of which you can see the arches for the bells.
Holy Week: the best time to visit the Church of Humilladero
Easter Week is, without a doubt, an ideal time to visit Humilladero if you want to enjoy the processions and traditions of the municipality. During this week, the Brotherhood of Los Dolores takes the Crucified Christ in procession, carried only by the women of the town. The Virgin of Sorrows arrives to meet him in the centre of the village, one of the most solemn moments of the procession.
